Summer 2025

TSSAA rules explained and how it affects competitive lacrosse

As we prepare for our 16th summer of No-Excuse Lacrosse we continue to evolve with the times. This is the first year that lacrosse in Tennessee falls under the sanctioning of the TSSAA.

  • Fall: Varsity coaches (head and assistants) cannot coach any high school players during the fall
  • Summer: Varsity coaches are allowed to coach players in the summer but are limited to interaction with their players until after the spring season ends
  • Black Out periods: Coaches must also comply with a Black Out period (for two weeks) including the week prior to the 4th of July and the week of the 4th.

No-Excuse Summer 2025

“Players are made in the off-season” and we must continue to focus on the proper development for our players. There is a wide range of talent levels in Memphis and we will continue to help all players get better in the off season. However, it is not always in the best interest to mix athletes with dramatic differences in ability. This will be an area of focus this summer.

We will continue to provide “à la carte” selections for registrations, ie: yearly/fall/summer options, along with paying for tournaments separately. We are also adding additional small group skill sessions.

Skill sessions:

In addition to afternoon team practices we will add “small group” (10 players max) morning sessions for players to develop at a more focused pace for their skill level. These training sessions will provide small group (age and skill level specific) skills in one-hour sessions.

Monday-Thursday from the start of practice in May until the black-out period last week of June. Depending on interest levels, these small group sessions will continue in July. Again, we are providing options for those that are interested.

Summer Tournament Rosters:

  • Selecting teams that will be most competitive: We appreciate the expense and time commitment for families to travel. Players benefit the most by playing with athletes of a similar skill level. We will be selecting teams to give more advanced players opportunities to improve in competition.
  • For newer/less experienced players: some who are not quite ready for tournament competition. We are committed to helping them improve by adding skill sessions and practices to specifically help them catch up. For some young players, competitive lacrosse can feel intimidating.  However with the right training and atmosphere many young players can develop skills and confidence quickly.  Additionally those players will avoid the expense of travel only to be disappointed with a lack of playing time.
